OVERVIEW

Pop Music Carnival

A narrative and navigable sonic environment that simulates the real world-wide music carnivals spatial experience such as Coachella, EDC and Ultra.

Users can use Oculus Quest controllers to explore the whole playground, enjoy artists performance and have fun with friends!

FINAL DESIGN
CHALLENGE
Design an immersive sonic environment

A spatial audio scene consists of non-direction sounds(i.e., zones), omni-direction sounds(i.e., point sources) and uni-direction/multi-directional sounds(i.e., single or multiple sound cones on an object). The whole experience needs to be navigable and unfold a narrative. Some sounds should be animated depending on the scene/narratives.

CONCEPT

My inspiration is from some world-wide music festivals such as EDC, Coachella, Ultra. Thinking about all these places they are holding in a grand open playground with many performance stages, entertaining facilities, and diverse street foods.  Artists will perform their works in different stages spotted around in the park and people can visit each corner for fun on their preference. Although the whole environment contains tons of various sounds, you will not feel too noisy because when getting close to a specific area, the dominant music will come into their ear, filtering out other sounds. You can relax here to have multiple fun experiences.

IDEATION & FAST PROTOTYPING

Pop Music Carnival includes 8 audio tracks to diversify the immersive spatial audio experience, including artist performance stages, recreation facility and dining area. To better visualize my idea, I used  the web-based application, Inviso, to design my virtual sonic environment and decide on sound source location. Inviso enables me to construct complex immersive sonic environments with 3D dynamic sound components.

Area 1- 4 are 4 performance stages surrounding the central rest area. Area 5 is an entertainment area with the carousel and roller coaster. In the middle of all areas, listeners can hear all sounds coming from all directions.

➊ Uni-directional sound + Zone:  k-pop stage with audience cheer

& Omni-directional sounds +Zone:  R&B and EDM performance with crowd ambience/cheers

➍ Omni-directional sounds + Zone: Static sound source to simulate a techno area for people to talk

➎ multi-directional sounds 1 & Multi-directional sounds 2:  Rotating carousel sound  and roller coaster sound. If the listener comes into the middle of the trajectory, they can feel riding on the horse and can hear screaming from the  roller coaster on their left side.
